How to Start Sounding: A Beginner's First Session, Step by Step
Share
I run The BDSM Store and test the gear I recommend. Everything here is first-hand experience, not medical advice.
A first sounding session is short, shallow, and slow: a sterilised medium-sized sound, a sachet of sterile lube, a few centimetres of insertion under gravity, a few minutes of holding still, a gentle removal, and a glass of water. That is the whole of it, and it should take fifteen minutes including the washing. Everything that goes wrong in sounding comes from skipping a step or adding one (more depth, more size, more pressure) before the previous session has earned it. This guide is the first session in full, then the second and third, then the progression over months, then how to bring a partner into it.
I teach this the way I was taught: safety steps first, every time, until they are automatic, and the pleasure takes care of itself. If you have not read is sounding safe, read it before this page; it explains why each of the rules below exists, and a rule you understand is one you keep. If you want to know what it will feel like, does sounding hurt walks through a first session sensation by sensation.
This is the method chapter of the sounding guide. Equipment choices are in what is a sounding rod.
What you need (the complete list)
- One sound, 6 to 8 mm (18 to 24 Fr), surgical stainless steel Hegar or Dittel, or a medical-silicone sound with a flared base. From a medical supplier or a named kink maker, not an unbranded marketplace set. If you bought a set, choose the 6 or 7 mm and put the rest away.
- Sterile lubricant sachets, water-based, glycerin-free, single-use, from a pharmacy (sold for catheters). One sachet per session.
- 70 percent isopropyl alcohol or a clean pot for boiling.
- Unscented soap.
- Nitrile gloves, optional but recommended.
- Clean towels and a clean surface (a fresh paper towel on a tray).
- A glass of water for afterwards.
- Fifteen minutes with no interruptions and no alcohol.
Not needed for a first session: anything curved, anything textured, anything vibrating, anything longer than 20 cm, anything from a drawer that was not made for this.
Before the session: 24 hours and 30 minutes
The day before: drink plenty of water. Do not sound if you have any urinary symptoms, any genital irritation, or if you are on the list in who should not sound.
Thirty minutes before: sterilise the sound (below), then shower, washing the penis thoroughly with soap and cleaning under the foreskin if you have one. Urinate; a half-full bladder is comfortable, a full one is not. Trim or push aside pubic hair near the opening if it is in the way. Set up your surface. Then do nothing that gets your hands dirty: no phone, no snacks.
Preparation: sterilise, wash, set up
- Sterilise the sound: wash in hot soapy water, then boil for 10 minutes fully submerged, or soak in 70 percent isopropyl alcohol for 10 minutes and let it evaporate completely. Place on a clean paper towel. If it has gone cold, rinse in hot tap water just before use so it is warm to the touch.
- Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap, or put on nitrile gloves after washing.
- Lay out: the sound on its towel, an unopened lube sachet, a second towel for your lap, the water.
- Position: sit on the edge of a bed or a chair with a towel under you, or lie back propped on pillows so you can see what you are doing. Standing works too. Choose whatever lets the penis be held upright comfortably.
- Get partially aroused. Semi-hard is ideal: the urethra is straight and relaxed and the opening is not clamped tight. Fully hard makes the opening harder to enter; fully soft makes the penis harder to hold straight. Use the ordinary (non-sterile) lube on the shaft for this, keeping it away from the opening.
- Open the sterile sachet. Squeeze a generous amount along the full length of the sound, and a good bead at the opening of the urethra, working a little just inside with the tip of the sound itself rather than a finger.
Insertion: the gravity method
- Hold the penis upright with one hand, just below the head, so the urethra is as straight as possible. Pull the opening gently open with thumb and finger.
- Rest the tip of the sound at the opening. Do not push. Let it sit there for a breath so the opening adjusts to the touch.
- Breathe out slowly, and let go of the sound. A steel sound, with the penis held upright, will sink under its own weight. That is the entire technique. Your other hand only steadies it and keeps it vertical. A silicone sound is lighter and needs the gentlest fingertip guidance, no more than the weight of a steel sound would give.
- Expect a sting at the first centimetre, lasting seconds, and then the strange cold pressure of the sound sliding in. If the sting does not fade in ten seconds, the sound is too wide for today: remove it and use a smaller one.
- Let it go in two to four centimetres and stop. Hold the sound where it is. That is the whole of a first insertion. Do not aim for depth. Do not aim for the curve. The point of the first session is to find out what it feels like and to practise the routine.
If the sound will not go in
- It will not enter the opening at all: you are too tense, too hard, or the sound is too wide. Breathe for a minute, let the erection soften slightly, add more lube, try once more. If no, stop for today. Many first sessions are exactly this and the second session works.
- It goes in a centimetre and stops: the opening and the first stretch are the narrowest part. Hold the sound still and breathe; the urethra often relaxes after thirty seconds and the sound continues under its own weight. If not, add lube and lift the penis more upright. If still not, end the session. Never push.
- It goes in a few centimetres and meets a soft stop: that is a fold of lining or a slight bend. Pull back a few millimetres, re-angle slightly, let gravity try again. If it stops again, that is your depth for today.
- It hurts: stop. Pain is the wrong size, dry lube, or the wrong angle. Not a thing to push through.
A first session that ends with the sound never going past the opening is a successful first session. You learned the routine, your body learned the sensation, and nothing was injured.
Holding, moving, and how long to stay
With the sound resting a few centimetres in, let it stay for a minute or two. Notice the sensation: pressure, fullness, warmth, the urge to urinate, all normal. If you want to, slide the sound out by a centimetre and let it sink back, slowly, a few times. Small movements, slow, always keeping a hand on the sound. Do not twist. Do not push. If arousal builds, enjoy it; if it does not, that is also normal for a first time.
Duration: five minutes of insertion is plenty for a first session, ten at most. Later sessions can run to twenty or thirty. Longer than that and the lining starts to object regardless of experience.
Orgasm: not a first-session goal. If it happens, hold the sound firmly so the contractions cannot draw it inward, and let it happen. Ejaculation will come around the sound or be partly held.
Removal
Slowly, straight out, with the penis held upright, over three or four seconds. Expect a small sting at the opening as it leaves. Place the sound on its towel. If it resists coming out, do not pull; breathe, add lube at the opening, wait for the urethra to relax, and try again. It will come.
Aftercare for the urethra
- Urinate within a few minutes. It will sting; this is the urethra being flushed and it is the single best thing you can do against infection.
- Drink the water, and keep drinking through the day.
- Wash the sound with soap and hot water, dry it, and store it sealed.
- Expect a mild burn on urinating for the rest of the day and perhaps a pink tinge at the first pass. Not expected: more than a trace of blood, burning that worsens, urgency, cloudiness, or fever. Those are in when to see a doctor.
- Rest the urethra for at least three or four days before the next session.
Sessions two and three
The same routine, exactly, until it is automatic. What changes: the sting at the opening is briefer, the sound goes in more easily, and you can let it rest a little deeper, perhaps five to seven centimetres, and stay a little longer. Most people find real pleasure appears in the second or third session, once the novelty is familiar enough to relax into. Stay with the same size for at least three sessions. Keep every rule: sterile sound, sterile sachet, washed hands, gravity, no force, urinate after.
Progression over months: size, depth, texture, vibration
- Size: go up one millimetre only when the current size enters with no sensation of stretch at all. Many people settle happily at 8 to 10 mm and never go further. Larger sizes are not better; they are just larger, and past about 11 or 12 mm the stricture risk rises for little gain.
- Depth: extend by a centimetre or two per session as comfort allows, staying in the straight spongy urethra. The curve under the pubic bone (typically 10 to 12 cm in) is a wall for straight sounds and the point where beginners get into trouble. Leave it alone for months.
- The curve and the prostate: an advanced goal, with a curved sound (Pratt, later Van Buren), a specific body position, and a willingness to abandon any attempt that resists. Many experienced practitioners never go there and lose nothing. If you do, learn it from someone who has done it, in person, not from a page.
- Texture: ribbed or beaded sounds add intensity and friction. Introduce them only after months of smooth sounding, at a size smaller than your smooth maximum, and stop at any scraping sensation.
- Vibration: a vibrating sound is a good addition once the routine is solid. Keep the motor end dry and outside.
- Plugs: a short urethral plug worn during masturbation or sex is a natural next step once 8 mm is comfortable. Smooth, short, with a secure glans ring, and no wider than your comfortable sound.
- Frequency: once or twice a week with rest days is sustainable. Daily sounding does not give the lining time to settle.
Sounding with a partner
Being sounded by someone else is a different experience: more intense, more trusting, and the basis of a lot of medical-play and dominance scenes. The rules do not change, and a few are added:
- The partner learns the routine first, ideally by watching you do it to yourself. Sterilisation, lube, gravity, no force; all of it.
- Negotiate as for any scene: depth limit, size, duration, safeword, what happens if it hurts. The person being sounded has absolute veto, instantly, and the partner stops the moment they say so.
- The partner uses gravity too. A partner's hand on a sound is the most common source of forcing, because they cannot feel what you feel. Their job is to hold the penis upright and steady the sound, not to push it.
- Constant feedback. "Where is it, how does it feel, more or stop." The sounded person narrates; the partner listens.
- Start with the sounded person's established size and depth, not further.
- Gloves, always, for the partner.
- Aftercare as for any scene, plus the urethral aftercare above.
For the sounded person, handing someone else a sound is one of the more vulnerable things in kink, and it belongs with a partner who has earned it. The consent guide covers the negotiation; the fantasy kinks guide covers the medical-play scenario it often lives in.
Starting sounding with a vulva
The routine is the same with three changes. The sound is smaller: 4 to 6 mm. The depth is shallower: one to two centimetres, never more than three, because the urethra is about four centimetres long and the bladder is at the end of it. And the hygiene is stricter still, because the shorter urethra makes infection easier: sterile everything, hands washed twice, urinate immediately after, and watch for symptoms over the following two days. Insertion is straight (no curve to worry about), the sensation is often described as G-spot pressure from the other side, and clitoral stimulation alongside is what most people find makes it pleasurable rather than merely strange.
Frequently asked questions
How do you start sounding?
Sterilise a 6 to 8 mm surgical steel or silicone sound, wash hands and penis, apply sterile single-use lube to the sound and the opening, hold the penis upright, rest the tip at the opening, breathe out, and let the sound sink under its own weight two to four centimetres. Hold for a few minutes, remove slowly, urinate, drink water. Never push.
How do you use a sounding rod?
With gravity: a lubricated steel sound held vertically at the opening of the urethra slides in under its own weight, with the other hand only steadying it. Small, slow movements once it is in; a hand on it at all times; slow straight removal; urinate after.
What size sound should I start with?
Six to eight millimetres. Not the thinnest in a set; thin sounds wander and scratch. For a vulva, four to six millimetres and very shallow.
How deep should a beginner go?
Two to four centimetres for the first session, extending by a centimetre or two per session as comfort allows, staying in the straight part of the urethra. The curve, about 10 to 12 cm in, is for experienced practitioners with curved sounds, months later.
How long should a sounding session last?
Five minutes of insertion for a first session, ten at most. Later sessions can run to twenty or thirty minutes. Longer than that irritates the lining regardless of experience.
What if the sound will not go in?
Breathe, let the erection soften slightly, add lube, lift the penis more upright, and let gravity try again. If it still stops, end the session; a first session that ends at the opening is a successful one. Never push past resistance.
How often can you do sounding?
Once or twice a week with rest days of at least three or four days between sessions early on. Daily sounding does not let the lining settle and raises the risk of scarring.
Can a partner do sounding to me?
Yes, once they have learned the full routine, ideally by watching you. Negotiate size, depth, duration, and a safeword; the partner uses gravity and steadies rather than pushes; the sounded person gives constant feedback and has instant veto; gloves for the partner; aftercare for both.
Should I be hard or soft for sounding?
Semi-hard is ideal: the urethra is straight and relaxed and the opening is not clamped tight. Fully hard makes entry harder; fully soft makes the penis harder to hold straight.
