Edging vs. Gooning: What Is the Difference, and When Does Edging Become a Problem?

I run The BDSM Store and test the gear I recommend. Everything here is first-hand experience, not medical advice.
Edging is a technique: bringing yourself to the edge of orgasm and backing off, in a session with a beginning, an end, and a point. Gooning is a state: prolonged, often hours-long masturbation, usually to pornography, in which the person deliberately pursues a trance-like, mindless, overwhelmed condition and tries to stay there as long as possible. Edging is one of the tools gooning uses, which is why the two get confused, but they are not the same thing, and the difference matters because one is a harmless and useful practice and the other is, for a lot of the people doing it, a compulsive behaviour with real costs.
I want to be fair here, because gooning has a community, a vocabulary, and defenders who describe it as a kink, and for some people it is one: a chosen, bounded, occasionally indulged altered state, the way an intense scene is. I have no quarrel with that. But most of the email I get about it is from men who do not experience it as a choice, who are losing hours a day to it, and who found the word after the behaviour. This guide explains what gooning is and where the word came from, how it differs from edging in structure and effect, the honest signs that your edging has become something else, and how to keep edging as the pleasure it is meant to be.
This is a chapter of the orgasm control guide. The technique itself is in what is edging; the health questions in is edging bad for you.
What gooning is
Gooning, in the community that uses the word, means masturbating for an extended period, typically hours, while deliberately cultivating a dazed, mindless, euphoric state ("the goon state," "gooned out"), often with pornography arranged to maximise stimulation (multiple screens or tabs, compilations, specific genres), usually without orgasm for most or all of the session, and often with a vocabulary and aesthetic of its own: slack-jawed expressions, repetitive phrases, an idea of surrendering the mind to arousal. The point is not the orgasm and not even the edge; it is the state itself, and staying in it. Edging is used as a technique within gooning to keep arousal high without ending the session.
Where the word comes from
"Goon" as a slang for a dazed or foolish person goes back a century. The sexual sense, and the verb, grew up in online pornography communities in the 2010s, where "goon" came to mean the slack, stupefied look of someone deep in a long session, and "gooning" the practice of pursuing that look. It spread through forums, then through image boards and dedicated subreddits, and by the early 2020s had become general internet slang, joked about far beyond the communities that practise it. "Gooner" is the noun for a practitioner and, more widely, a mocking term for a man who watches too much pornography. Like "edging," the word now gets used loosely for any extended masturbation.
Edging vs gooning: the differences
| Edging | Gooning | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A technique | A state, pursued for itself |
| Duration | 20 to 40 minutes, up to an hour | Hours; sessions of 4 to 8 hours are common in the community |
| Goal | A stronger orgasm, control, or a bounded denial | Staying in the trance; orgasm is often avoided or irrelevant |
| Attention | Focused on the body and the approach to the edge | Dissociated, "mindless"; the point is to stop thinking |
| Pornography | Optional; many people edge without any | Central; usually multiple sources, escalating |
| Ending | Planned: release, denial, or a scene's end | Exhaustion, interruption, or running out of time |
| Afterwards | Satisfied, or pleasantly frustrated | Often drained, foggy, ashamed, "lost the afternoon" |
| Frequency | A few times a week at most | Often daily, with difficulty stopping |
| With a partner | Common; it is the basis of tease and denial | Rare; it is solitary by nature |
| Health picture | Benign | Associated with fatigue, arousal problems with partners, anxiety, and social withdrawal in the people who do it compulsively |
Gooning as a kink (the fair case)
Some people do gooning the way other people do a long rope scene or a weekend of denial: as a chosen, occasional, intense altered state that they enjoy, plan for, and come out of without harm. For them it sits alongside hypno kink, sensory overload, and the "mindless" fantasies in the fantasy kinks guide (bimbofication and its relatives share the same appeal of surrendering the mind). Done that way, a few times a year, with the time cleared and no sense of compulsion, it is a kink like any other and I would not tell anyone it is wrong. The test is the same as for anything in this area: is it chosen, is it bounded, and does it cost you anything you did not agree to pay.
Gooning as a compulsion (the common case)
For most of the people who write to me, the answer to those questions is no, no, and yes. The pattern is: the sessions started as edging and got longer; pornography became essential and escalated; the afternoons disappeared; sleep, work, exercise, and relationships thinned out; arousal with a partner became difficult because nothing matched the screen; attempts to cut down failed; and a sense of shame set in that the community's vocabulary ("gooner," "gooned out") sometimes encouraged rather than relieved. That is a compulsive behaviour, with the same shape as any other, and the thing to understand is that it is the pattern that causes the harm, not the edging inside it. Holding at the edge for thirty minutes does nothing bad to anyone. Doing it for six hours a day, dissociated, to a screen, does, and the harm is from the hours, the dissociation, and the screen.
Signs your edging has become gooning
- You cannot say how long a session will be when you start it, and it is usually longer than you meant.
- Sessions regularly exceed an hour, and often several.
- You need pornography to do it, and what you need has escalated.
- The point has shifted from the body to the state; you are chasing feeling blank, not feeling good.
- You do it most days whether you feel like it or not.
- You feel worse afterwards: drained, foggy, ashamed, behind on the day.
- You have tried to cut down and could not.
- You are more aroused by the idea of the session than by a partner.
- It is costing you sleep, work, money, or people.
Three or more of these, consistently, and the thing you are doing is no longer edging in any useful sense.
"Does edging count as a relapse?"
People in pornography-abstinence or masturbation-abstinence programmes ask whether edging without orgasm breaks their streak. From outside any particular programme's rules, here is the honest answer: if your goal is to break a compulsive pattern, edging to pornography is the pattern, with the orgasm removed. It is the hours, the screen, and the dissociation that the pattern is made of, not the ejaculation, and edging in that way is not a loophole but the thing itself. If your goal is the streak for its own sake, the rules are whatever your programme says. If your goal is to keep edging as a healthy practice while dropping the compulsive one, the test is the one in this guide: bounded, no screen, chosen, and over in under an hour.
Keeping edging bounded
What keeps edging a pleasure, from twenty years of doing it and from watching what goes wrong:
- Set the end before you start. A number of edges, a number of minutes, a timer. Stop when you reach it, whether or not you want to.
- Body over screen. Edge with your attention on sensation. If you use pornography, one thing, not a wall, and consider doing without; many people find edging is better without it.
- Use something physical. A ring, a toy, a wand. Physical sensation is too strong to dissociate to and tends to keep sessions honest.
- Keep it to under an hour. Past that the returns are gone and the state changes.
- Make it occasional, not daily. Three or four sessions a week for a man training for control; less for pleasure.
- Finish, or decide not to, deliberately. An ending that is a choice is the difference between a session and a slide.
- Bring it to a partner. Tease and denial with another person is edging at its best, and it is impossible to goon with someone watching.
- Notice how you feel after. Good means keep going. Bad means something has changed.
If you want to stop and cannot
Compulsive sexual behaviour is treatable and common, and nobody who treats it will be surprised by anything you describe. What helps: naming it without shame (compulsion is a mechanism, not a character flaw); treating what is underneath, which is usually stress, loneliness, anxiety, or boredom; replacing the hours with something, because an empty afternoon is where the pattern lives; reducing the screen before reducing the sex; and talking to a kink-aware therapist who will neither pathologise your sexuality nor pretend the pattern is fine. The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom keeps a directory of kink-aware professionals; a sex therapist with AASECT or COSRT certification is a safe choice. The edging can come back later, bounded. The goal is not to stop being sexual; it is to stop losing afternoons.
Frequently asked questions
What is gooning?
Prolonged masturbation, typically for hours, in pursuit of a trance-like, mindless, overwhelmed state, usually with pornography arranged for maximum stimulation and often without orgasm. The state itself is the goal. Edging is used as a technique within it.
What is the difference between edging and gooning?
Edging is a bounded technique of 20 to 40 minutes with a planned ending, focused on the body, with or without pornography. Gooning is an hours-long dissociated state pursued for itself, centred on pornography, often daily, and frequently compulsive.
What is edging in the context of gooning?
In gooning, edging is the method used to keep arousal high without ending the session: approaching orgasm and backing off repeatedly so the trance can continue for hours. The technique is the same as ordinary edging; the context and duration are what differ.
Is gooning a kink?
For some people, yes: a chosen, occasional, bounded altered state similar to hypno kink or sensory overload. For many of the people who do it, it is a compulsive behaviour that found a name afterwards. The test is whether it is chosen, bounded, and free of costs you did not agree to.
Is gooning bad for you?
Done compulsively, in sessions of hours, daily, with escalating pornography, it is associated with fatigue, arousal problems with partners, anxiety, shame, and social withdrawal. The harm comes from the hours, the dissociation, and the screen, not from holding at the edge.
Does edging count as a relapse?
If the goal is to break a compulsive pornography pattern, edging to pornography is that pattern minus the orgasm, so yes in substance. If the goal is a streak, your programme's rules apply. Edging kept bounded, without a screen, is a different activity.
How do I keep edging from becoming gooning?
Decide the ending before you start, keep sessions under an hour, focus on the body rather than a screen, use physical sensation, make it occasional, finish deliberately, and bring it to a partner when you can.
Where does the word gooning come from?
From goon as slang for a dazed person; the sexual sense grew up in online pornography communities in the 2010s to describe the slack, stupefied look of a long session, and became general internet slang by the early 2020s.
