How to Give a Spanking: Erotic Spanking for Beginners (OTK, Technique, and the Build)
Share
I run The BDSM Store and test the gear I recommend. Everything here is first-hand experience, not medical advice.
To give a good spanking, you put your partner over your knee or over something firm, you warm their buttocks up with light, rhythmic, open-handed strokes until the skin is pink and warm, you build the force in steps with pauses to rub and talk, you aim for the fleshy lower-middle of each cheek and stay away from the tailbone and the hips, you keep a rhythm they can sink into, you peak with a handful of harder strokes when they are ready for them, and you bring them back down slowly and hold them after. That is the whole thing. It takes ten minutes to describe and a few sessions to feel in the hands, and the two mistakes that make first spankings disappointing are both about impatience: hitting hard before the skin is ready, and hitting in the same spot without a rhythm.
I have taught spanking in classes with a cushion over a volunteer's lap and I have taught it to couples in their own bedrooms, and the hand is the only implement anyone needs for the first ten scenes, because it feels what it does. This guide covers the positions (OTK and the others), the exact targets on the buttocks, the hand shapes and what each produces, the warm-up and the build, rhythm, the difference between a play spanking and a discipline spanking and how each is delivered, how to read the person over your knee, a first scene for a couple written out stroke by stroke, when and how to move to a paddle, and how to look after a spanked bottom afterwards.
This is a chapter of impact play 101. The targets are mapped in where it is safe to hit; the next implement is chosen in choosing a spanking paddle; the furniture is in spanking benches.
Before the first stroke
Talk: how hard (the bottom names a scale: "a warm glow," "I want to feel it tomorrow," "make me cry"); marks or no marks; the mood (playful, sexy, stern, punishing); the safeword and a non-verbal signal; whether clothing comes off in stages (over trousers, over underwear, bare is a classic build in itself); and whether the bottom wants to be told what is coming or surprised. Remove rings and watches. Trim nails. Warm your hands. Set the room: a firm chair for OTK, a cushion for the bottom's hips if the top's thighs are bony, nothing sharp within reach. And understand what the bottom wants from it, because the same strokes delivered as a playful game and as a solemn punishment are different scenes.
Positions: OTK and the others
| Position | How | Feel | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over the knee (OTK) | Top sits on a firm armless chair or the edge of a bed; bottom lies across the top's lap, hips over one thigh, torso supported on the other side, hands and feet on the floor or held | The most intimate; the top's free hand can hold, rub, and restrain; the bottom feels held; the classic | Hand and short paddles only; the top's thighs tire; big height differences are awkward |
| Over the top's lap on the bed | Top sits against the headboard with legs out; bottom lies across the thighs | Comfortable for both; long sessions | Less "over the knee" feel |
| Bent over a bed, chair back, or table | Bottom stands and bends at the hips with hands on the surface | Presents the buttocks well; room for paddles and canes; stern | The bottom's legs tire; less contact |
| On all fours | On the bed or floor, hips up | Open; room for anything; easy access for the free hand | Less restraint; the bottom can move away |
| Lying face down | On a bed with a pillow under the hips | Relaxed; good for long, thuddy, trance spankings | The top works at an angle; the buttocks are less presented |
| Standing, hands on head or wall | The bottom stands and is spanked from behind | Disciplinary; humiliating; the bottom must hold still | Hard to hold still; light to moderate only |
| Over a spanking bench | See spanking benches | Held, presented, still, for as long as you like | Needs the furniture |
OTK is where most people start and where the hand works best. For the others, a pillow or wedge under the hips raises the target and tilts it toward you.
Where to aim on the buttocks
The target is the fleshy lower-middle of each cheek, the "sit spot" where the buttock meets the top of the thigh and the fat and muscle are thickest. That is where a spanking feels best, marks least dangerously, and is remembered when the bottom sits down the next day, which is the point of a disciplinary one. Alternate cheeks. Work outward and downward from the centre of each cheek toward the sit spot; the upper-outer buttock and the top of the thigh take lighter strokes. Avoid the tailbone and the top of the cleft (bone close to the surface), the hips (the bony ridge at the side), the lower back (kidneys), and the inside of the thigh and the backs of the knees. Hitting one spot repeatedly bruises it; spread the strokes and come back. The full map with the reasons is in where it is safe to hit.
Hand shapes and what each feels like
| Hand | How | Sensation | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat palm | Fingers together, hand flat, wrist loose | Broad, stinging, loud; the standard | Most of the spanking |
| Cupped hand | Palm slightly hollowed | Thuddy, deeper, with a hollow popping sound; less sting | Warm-up; thud for trance; the "gentle but deep" stroke |
| Fingertips | Fingers only, from the wrist | Sharp, light sting | Teasing; precision; the tops of the thighs |
| Heel of the hand | The pad below the thumb | Heavy, localised thud | The peak strokes; use sparingly |
| Upward stroke | Hand swept upward from the thigh into the sit spot | Lifts the flesh; stings differently; feels penetrating | Variety; the stroke bottoms remember |
| Rubbing and squeezing | Between strokes | Spreads the heat; soothes; teases | Constantly, between sets |
The stroke comes from the wrist and the elbow, not the shoulder, for the first two-thirds of a spanking. A loose wrist makes a sting; a stiff wrist and a swing from the shoulder make a thud that bruises. Power is for the peak, and even then it is the elbow, not the shoulder.
The warm-up
Five to ten minutes, and it is not optional. Start with rubbing and squeezing, then light pats, barely more than touches, over the whole of both cheeks and the tops of the thighs, at a steady rhythm of about one a second, alternating cheeks. Over several minutes, let the pats become light slaps and then firm ones, watching the skin turn pink and feeling it warm under your hand. The warm-up brings blood to the skin and muscle, releases the first endorphins, and lets the bottom's body learn that what is coming is pleasure; a spanking that starts hard is simply being hit, and a spanking that starts with a warm-up can go far harder later with the bottom begging for more. Spankers who skip this are the reason some people think they do not like spanking.
The build
After the warm-up, the force rises in steps. Each step is a set of strokes (a dozen, twenty) at a level, then a pause to rub, to check in, to let the heat spread, then the next level. The steps are small; the bottom's tolerance rises with each one, and a spanking that reaches a hard peak over thirty minutes feels entirely different from one that reaches the same force in three. Vary the hand shapes and the target within each set. Use the free hand to hold the bottom in place (a hand on the small of the back is both restraint and reassurance), to rub between sets, and, if the scene is sexual, to tease. Talk: the voice is part of a spanking, whether it is "good girl" or "you know why this is happening."
Rhythm, pauses, and the peak
Rhythm is what turns strokes into a spanking. A steady beat lets the bottom relax into it and go into their head; a change of beat (a flurry of fast light strokes, a long pause, a single hard one out of nowhere) is the top's expressive range. Pauses are not breaks; they are the moments when the heat spreads and the bottom's anticipation does the work. Build toward a peak: a short set of the hardest strokes the bottom can take, delivered when they are warmed and deep in it, counted aloud if the scene is disciplinary. Then down: a set at a lower level, a lower one, hands rubbing, and the spanking ends in touch, not in a hard stroke.
Play spanking vs discipline spanking
| Play / erotic spanking | Discipline spanking | |
|---|---|---|
| Mood | Warm, teasing, sexual, affectionate | Formal, stern, controlled |
| Position | OTK, the bed, all fours; comfortable | OTK, bent over, standing; presented |
| Warm-up | Long; part of the pleasure | Shorter, but still present; the aim is a safe punishment, not an injury |
| Strokes | Varied, rhythmic, interspersed with touch | A set number, counted, even, on the sit spot |
| Talk | Praise, teasing, dirty talk | The reason for the punishment, the count, the lesson |
| Ending | Sex, aftercare, or both | Forgiveness, stated; then aftercare |
| Who it suits | Everyone who likes impact | Subs who want discipline; brats as funishment; see how to punish a sub |
Most spankings are play. A discipline spanking is theatre as much as consequence, and its form (the count, the stern voice, the stated reason) is what makes it land; the strokes themselves are often no harder.
Reading the bottom
Skin: pink and even is right; white spots mean the blood has been pushed out and that spot needs a rest; deep purple means stop there. Breathing: slow and deep is right; held breath means the last stroke was too much; moaning, laughing, and swearing are all fine; sobbing can be release or distress, and the only way to know is to pause and ask. Body: pushing the bottom up into the hand is the best sign there is; flinching, clenching, curling, and reaching back to cover are too much, too fast; going limp and quiet is subspace, which means slow down, check in, and do not escalate. Words: check in during pauses with a question that needs a real answer. The safeword stops everything; a good top rarely hears it because they stopped first.
A first spanking scene, stroke by stroke
- Setup: a firm chair, the bottom over the knee with hips on your thigh, clothing on at first. A hand on their back. "Tell me if anything is wrong."
- Two minutes of rubbing and squeezing over clothing, then pats, alternating cheeks, one a second.
- Clothing down to underwear. Two minutes of light slaps, cupped hand, over the whole area, same rhythm. Rub.
- Underwear down. Rub the warm skin. Two sets of a dozen firm flat-palm slaps to the sit spots, alternating, with a pause and rubbing between. Check in: "Harder, the same, or softer?"
- Build: three more sets, each a little harder, with variety (a few fingertip stings on the thighs, a few cupped thuds, an upward stroke). Rub between. Talk.
- Peak: six to ten of the hardest strokes they have said yes to, counted if that suits the mood, on the sit spots.
- Down: a set of moderate strokes, a set of light pats, then rubbing, then holding.
- After: whatever the scene was for; then aftercare.
Twenty to thirty minutes. The bottom will be surprised by how much they took and how good it felt; the top will have learned more from their hand than from any article.
Moving from hand to paddle
When the hand is sore before the bottom is satisfied, when you want more thud or more sound, or when the position (bent over, on a bench) puts the target out of a hand's comfortable reach. The first paddle is soft and light (leather or silicone, not wood), broad, and short-handled; it is used exactly as the hand was, with a warm-up by hand first, the same targets, and a lighter swing than you think, because a paddle concentrates force and does not feel what it does. Hold it loosely, swing from the elbow, land flat (an edge is a cane), and watch the skin twice as carefully. The whole topic, including wood, leather, silicone, tawses, and belts, is in how to choose a spanking paddle.
Aftercare for a spanked bottom
Hold them. A spanked bottom is often emotional, floaty, cold once the adrenaline drops, and in need of reassurance, especially after a disciplinary scene. Warmth (a blanket), water, something sweet, and quiet. Look at the skin: redness is fine; welts get a cool compress; bruises get arnica over the next days; broken skin (rare from the hand) gets antiseptic and a dressing. Check in the next day too, because drop arrives late. And the top needs care as well: hands iced, and the reassurance that the bottom wanted every stroke, which the bottom should give. The practice is in aftercare in BDSM.
Frequently asked questions
How do you give a spanking?
Put your partner over your knee or over something firm, warm the buttocks with light rhythmic open-handed strokes for five to ten minutes until the skin is pink, build the force in steps with pauses to rub and check in, aim for the fleshy lower-middle of each cheek and alternate, keep a rhythm, peak with a few hard strokes when they are ready, come back down through lighter strokes to touch, and hold them after.
What is OTK spanking?
Over the knee: the top sits on a firm chair and the bottom lies across their lap with hips over one thigh. It is the classic and most intimate spanking position, suits the hand and short paddles, lets the top's free hand hold and rub, and is where most people start.
Where should you aim when spanking?
The fleshy lower-middle of each buttock, the sit spot where the cheek meets the thigh, alternating cheeks and spreading strokes. Avoid the tailbone, the top of the cleft, the hips, the lower back, the inside of the thighs, and the backs of the knees.
Why does a spanking need a warm-up?
Light rhythmic strokes for five to ten minutes bring blood to the skin and muscle, release endorphins, and teach the body that what is coming is pleasure, so the bottom can take and enjoy far more later. A spanking that starts hard is simply being hit, and skipping the warm-up is why some people think they dislike spanking.
What is the difference between a play spanking and a punishment spanking?
A play spanking is warm, teasing, varied, and sexual, ending in sex or aftercare. A discipline spanking is formal: a stated reason, a set number of counted even strokes on the sit spot, a stern voice, and stated forgiveness at the end. The strokes are often no harder; the form is what makes it a punishment.
How hard should you spank?
As hard as the bottom has asked for, reached gradually. Strokes come from the wrist and elbow, not the shoulder, for most of the spanking; the hardest strokes are a short peak set after a full warm-up and build. The skin tells you: pink is right, white spots need a rest, deep purple means stop.
When should you move from the hand to a paddle?
When your hand is sore before the bottom is satisfied, when you want more thud or sound, or when the position puts the target out of comfortable reach. Start with a soft, light leather or silicone paddle, warm up by hand first, swing lighter than you think, land flat, and watch the skin more closely.
What aftercare does a spanked bottom need?
Holding, warmth, water, something sweet, and reassurance, especially after a disciplinary scene. Cool compresses for welts, arnica for bruises, antiseptic and a dressing for any broken skin, and a check-in the next day for drop. The top needs iced hands and reassurance too.
