Buying guide
What type of lubricant is best for BDSM play?
The right lube depends on the activities in your scene and the toys or materials involved. As a general guide:
- Water-based lubes are the most versatile. They are safe with all toy materials, including silicone, latex gloves, and condoms, and clean up easily. They can dry out faster during long scenes, so keep the bottle within reach for reapplication.
- Silicone-based lubes last significantly longer without reapplication, making them a popular choice for extended bondage or high-sensation scenes. However, they should never be used with silicone toys, as they can degrade the material over time.
- Hybrid lubes blend both formulas to balance longevity and compatibility, though it is still worth checking compatibility with your specific toys before use.
When in doubt, water-based is the safest starting point for mixed toy collections.
Are these lubricants body-safe and compatible with barriers like condoms and gloves?
Body safety is a priority in every scene. Water-based lubricants are universally compatible with latex and polyisoprene condoms and nitrile or latex gloves. Silicone-based lubricants are also condom-safe but should be avoided with silicone toys. Oil-based products are generally not compatible with latex barriers and can disrupt vaginal flora, so always check the product description carefully. We recommend choosing lubes that are free from glycerin, parabens, and numbing agents for scenes involving sensitive tissue or prolonged play.
Can I use lubricant with bondage rope, leather cuffs, or other BDSM gear?
Lubricant is mainly intended for body-to-body or body-to-toy contact rather than for treating gear directly. If lube transfers onto natural-fiber rope such as jute or hemp, it can weaken the fibers over time and affect knot security, which is a safety concern in any restraint scene. Leather restraints exposed to lube may require reconditioning afterward. For scenes that combine restraints with penetration or toy play, simply be mindful of contact points and clean gear promptly after play according to the manufacturer's care instructions.
How do we negotiate lubricant use before a scene?
Like every element of a power-exchange scene, lube preferences are worth discussing during negotiation. Some people have sensitivities or allergies to specific ingredients, so sharing the product label with your partner before play is a straightforward act of care. If either partner has a known sensitivity to fragrances, glycerin, or specific preservatives, choose an unfragranced, minimal-ingredient formula. Incorporating lube application into the scene itself, as part of a dominant or service dynamic for example, can be a meaningful and intimate ritual rather than an interruption. Consent and communication keep every moment of the scene safe and intentional.
How do I clean and store lubricants properly?
Water-based lubes rinse away easily with warm water from skin and most toy surfaces. Silicone-based lubes require a little more effort and a mild soap to remove fully. Always wash hands and any body areas thoroughly after a scene. Store lubricants at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and extreme heat, and ensure caps are tightly closed to prevent contamination. Check expiry dates regularly, as expired lubricants can change in texture and may no longer be suitable for use. Proper storage keeps your products performing at their best scene after scene.
